Adding fog lights to a K1100RS

Rather than buying an expensive bracket to mount some auxiliary fog lights, I made one out of a sheet of aluminum I had lying around. This bolts under the plastic cover under the headlight. It makes a compact, and protected mounting for a pair of Hella Optilux quartz lights ($34/pair).

Layout of components, showing original plastic cover, and added aluminum mounting plate. I used 10-32 stainless screws with self-locking nuts to hold the lights to the plate, and the plate to the plastic cover.

The cover is held on by 6 screws, accessible under the headlight.

Close-up of mounting method. The fog light relay attaches directly to the mounting plate.

Wiring notes: I connected the +12 volt lead from the relay to the battery through a 15 amp fuse, and the ground lead from the lamps to the central grounding screw, under the tank. I mounted a toggle switch to the plastic cover behind the right side of the tachometer, connected to the running light at the top of the headlight. With the switch on, the fog lights to come on whenever the ignition is on.
